Spreading Pink Feathers Hope

An integral part of our philosophy is looking after the staff that looks after our patients. We recognize that our patients spend far more time and have far more personal conversations with hospital staff than with their doctors. This often goes unrecognized: from the porters wheeling them from investigation to investigation to the many dedicated and caring nursing personnel – all offering an empathetic ear. Very little time and effort is spent on training and acknowledging these angels in the chain of caring. By offering an annual event at Groote Schuur Hospital where we have comprehensive talks on breast cancer and general wellness principles, we aim to empower hospital staff to look after our patients and simultaneously increase awareness of the disease amongst them.

This year Dr Roodt and a world class panel of experts spoke to Groote Schuur staff about “Survivorship” – everything that comes after the surgery and rounds of chemo and radiation: from the psychological impact to options for reconstruction Our generously sponsored pink Woolworths goodie bags with healthy treats was an unforgettable highlight of the day for the approximately 450 staff members that attended.  Each staff member also received a bright pink “feather of hope” from Dr Roodt and the Project Flamingo team coloring the hospital pink for the rest of the week.
