Colorectal surgery catch-up lists 13 March 2015 : A letter from Dr Claire Warden

Dear Project Flamingo Team

Re: Flamingo surgical list

I would like to express our thanks for the extra operating list we were given on 13th March 2015.

We were able to make an impact on our waiting list by operating on four patients. We managed to close two stomas on patients who otherwise would have had to wait an extraordinary amount of time for theatre. The usual waiting time is around 9 months with the added burden of often being cancelled on a list to make space for an urgent cancer operation. These patients will be incredibly grateful to no longer have to wear stoma bags and no doubt Groote Schuur Hospital will be relieved to no longer have to bear the cost of supplying stoma bags to these patients.

Our last patient on the list was a palliative patient that required a stoma to improve his quality of life. This surgery although not curative is done to provide a patient with quality of life and help preserve dignity.

Thank you for the gift bags which the surgical team feel very humbled by. It is us who are most thankful to you for providing a platform for us to do our jobs well.

Kind regards

Claire Warden
