Project Flamingo + AXIM = a brand new ultrasound machine

We were fortunate enough to receive an amazing and brand new ultrasound machine for use at, amongst others, the Groote Schuur Breast clinic.

Why will this machine make such a difference?

Ultrasound is critical for the diagnosis and management of breast cancer:

  • Most women with breast concerns will initially have a mammogram but quite often mammographic findings are inconclusive and an ultrasound is needed to confirm the diagnosis
  • Breast cancer is diagnosed with a tissue biopsy. This means that a needle is placed into the breast lump and cells are taken for examination in the laboratory. When this is done with ultrasound guidance, there is a greater chance of an accurate diagnosis on the first attempt. Without ultrasound, the biopsy may need to be repeated causing significant pain and distress to the patient.
  • If breast cancer is diagnosed early, it is often possible to surgically remove just the cancer, (lumpectomy) and not the entire breast. This is international standard of care but with a lumpectomy there is a risk of leaving some cancer behind, in which case a second operation becomes necessary. By using ultrasound in theatre during these procedures, this risk is decreased saving a significant number of women from redo surgery and possibly mastectomy
  • Finally, there are a number of young women who present to the breast clinic with symptoms of thickening or lumps in the breast. Mammogram is not appropriate in these women as their breast tissue is too dense. Ultrasound is the key investigation needed to evaluate these young women and should be done as, even though cancer is rare in this age group, it does occur and should be diagnosed early.

Was it not for the vision and passion of Carien Loubser and her team at Brainwaves, creating our story shared on Via Channel 147 with In jou Skoene and the passionate sharing of Eloise Pretorius at Smile 90.4fm – our story would never have spread so far and wide. Thank you for doing an amazing job in raising awareness about what we do and the need to raise money for this machine. To the wonderful people at Axim – thank you so much for the generous donation of this machine and making it so much easier to give excellent care to our patients!

This ultrasound machine will make a huge difference in helping us attain our goal of ensuring timely and holistic cancer treatment for women suffering from breast cancer.
