For Dr. Tina Muringathuparambil, volunteering with Project Flamingo has been more than just assisting with surgeries—it’s been a chance to make a real impact on the lives of breast cancer patients. Since joining the Flamingo Surgery Lists in 2022, she has seen firsthand how teamwork, compassion, and timely intervention can change the course of a patient’s journey.

When did you first start working on Flamingo lists? I started working on the Flamingo lists in November 2022 and it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience ever since.
What got you involved?
I was drawn to the project because of its mission to reduce surgical backlogs for breast cancer patients and provide timely care to patients who would otherwise face long waiting periods for life-changing surgery.
"Seeing the direct impact on patient outcomes made it an easy decision to get involved and being fortunate to work with an excellent team has helped make all the difference. " - Dr Tina Muringathuparambil
How many lists have you now done?
I’ve been part of 5 lists so far and hope to continue working with this remarkable initiative.
What do you enjoy about working on the Flamingo lists/about Project Flamingo? The teamwork and shared goal of improving patient care stand out the most. The energy and collaboration during the lists are truly special to witness.
It’s inspiring to work alongside dedicated colleagues who go above and beyond to ensure patients receive the surgery they need.
The gratitude from patients also make it all worthwhile.
Is there anything else you would like to say/add? I would like to thank the Project Flamingo community especially Amy MacFarlane and Michael Brombacher, thank you for shedding light on the Eastern Cape and giving us the opportunity to be a part of such a meaningful initiative. Project Flamingo is a testament to what can be achieved when passionate people come together for a cause. I’d encourage more healthcare professionals to get involved - it truly makes a difference.
