Our record attempt of 35 surgeries in a single day for #MandelaDay was unprecedented in South Africa. Media across South Africa helped us to amplify the work Project Flamingo does.
Volunteer teams in two provinces
Our volunteer teams did something extraordinary on Saturday 13 July. Our record attempt as part of our Mandela Day celebrations, meant that 35 surgeries were performed on vulnerable breast cancer patients in the Public Health sector in a single day.
These surgeries were performed in two provinces: Groote Schuur, Tygerberg, George, Cecilia Makiwane, and Livingstone Hospitals. Teams comprised of volunteer surgeons, anaesthetists, specialists in training, medical students, and patient support teams made up of Project Flamingo volunteers and former patients. The nursing staff and theater consumables were paid for by Project Flamingo.
