Dr Johan Zacharia is the kind of doctor who wants to be remembered for giving his all to every single patient. Off the clock, he’s kept grounded by his wife’s support, his love for his dogs, and learning to master both padel and golf.

When did you join your first Flamingo list? I first joined 2024 when starting as a Medical Officer at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital.
Is there a particular Flamingo moment or memory that stands out for you? One of the moments that really stood out for me was one day I was lucky enough to be there when the volunteers were talking to the patients the day before surgery, and to hear their cancer stories and their overcoming cancer thanks to Project Flamingo. That made me truly value what this project is. It's not often we get to see the patients a couple of years down the line, which they most likely would not have had without this project.
What in your life do you feel most grateful for? I am most grateful to my wife, who has always been a pillar of strength in my life.
When you are not at work, what do you enjoy doing most in your free time? I enjoy playing with my dogs, playing Padel, and now trying to learn how to play golf.
Which personal quality or characteristic would you most want to be known or remembered for? I would like to be known for trying my absolute best for every single patient of mine.
What advice do you have for young people starting their medical careers? Enjoy life, there is a time to focus on academics and a time to just live life and enjoy it.
What's the best advice someone's ever given you? And did you follow it? No matter how busy a call of life gets, you can only see the patient in front of you or do the task that is in front of you, then move to the next.
What is the one thing you want your patients to know? I will always try my absolute best to make sure you get the best treatment that I can possibly provide.
Is there is philosophy you live by? No matter what you do, give it your best.
