Dr Liana Roodt

My stories and how Project Flamingo was born are scattered throughout this website and I am so incredibly grateful for where this project is today. If you are curious to learn more about my journey with Project Flamingo, please read the snippets on “Lipstick and World War2” , “The Wine club that gave Project Flamingo wings” and “A Surgeon’s Healing Prayer”.On a more personal note… I am a 30-something specialist surgeon with a passion for breast cancer surgery. I obtained my MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 2006. I completed my internship at Groote Schuur Hospital and community service in Barberton, Mpumalanga. After I returned to Cape Town, I worked at GF Jooste Hospital as a surgical medical officer, while also completing a post-graduate certificate in Integrative Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch. It is during this time that my journey with breast cancer patients lead to the birth of Project Flamingo. I joined the Groote Schuur Department of Surgery in 2012 where I obtained my FCS (SA) and MMed (Surgery) Cum Laude from the University of Cape Town. For the past two years, I have been working as a consultant surgeon in the Surgical Breast and Endocrine and Trauma Surgery Units at Groote Schuur Hospital. From October 2017 I will start a new chapter in my own journey – while I will remain affiliated to both GSH and TBH hospitals, I will also be practicing as a private Breast and Endocrine surgeon in the Cape Winelands at Advanced Vergelegen Surgical centre in Somerset West. I believe that this will enable me to continue to grow the footprint of Project Flamingo and shape the way we practice medicine in South Africa.

I am an odd combination of a dreamer and doer… Although some people might find this contradictory, I believe that dreaming pushes me toward doing – and in the doing, I always find inspiration for more dreaming.
