Abigail Daniels

Dr Abigail Daniels is one of our regular anesthetist volunteers and also coordinate the other anesthetist volunteers for the surgeries performed at Groote Schuur Hospital. Here is some questions she answered for us:

Q: Tell us one interesting fact that most people don’t know about you
A: I am terrified of heights and flying, but I love to travel abroad.

Q: When did you first start working with Project Flamingo?
A: I first started working with Project Flamingo 4 years ago.

Q: What role do you play in the Project Flamingo team?
A: I am an anaesthetist, so in a nutshell, I help the patients fall asleep, I wake them up and make sure they are pain free. I try to help out as often as I can with the lists, depending on the flexibility of my job- I’m employed by the state. I also arrange for fellow anaesthetists to do the slates.

Q: What inspired you to get involved?
A: My grandmother. She was a breast cancer survivor and had a mastectomy in her 60’s. So I volunteer with her in mind.

Q: What is your favourite memory of working with Project Flamingo?
A: Theres been many but overall I would say the patient interaction and hearing their life stories. Its amazing when you take the time to listen to these ladies; their hope, strength, courage and will to live. Its truly inspiring…

Q: What is your favorite quote?
A: “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. Mahatma Gandhi.
